Storm, or at least noise, over wind power

The “Printing Green” booklet that we put out includes a little editorial about wind power, in which I opined that windmills, even in some of the places I love, are a whole lot better than destroying mountains, hollers, and water in our hunger for coal, and they are better than nuclear plants as long as the only guarantee we have about the waste is that some time down in the future it will come back to warp whoever is still living here.

This has made the Borealis Press a target for some folks, who promise us that neither they nor any of their hundreds of friends will ever buy a Borealis Press card again. To give them a plug, check out:

If you have any thoughts on the subject, do feel free to write us.

If it’s windmill noise you’re concerned about, I think you’re right in some cases – but not all. The turbines off of Vinalhaven, Maine, are reported to be quite noisy, as are a few others in Maine. I went up to the Kibby Mountain turbines in Maine, just to see how loud they are. Those machines, made by the Danish company Vestas, are darn near silent when you’re right among them. You can do your own research on the different manufacturers.

Best,
Mark
