All Occasion Card 442a
Joy is not in things; it is in us. Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
Bert Hardy, a giant of British documentary photography, shot this image on the Blackpool Promenade with a cheap Brownie box camera to illustrate his belief that an expensive camera is not required to take good pictures. He proved his point by capturing the beauty of high spirits and enthusiastic friendship on that breezy summer day at the seaside. His everyday camera was a Leica 35mm, which had not yet become the standard among his contemporary photojournalists in the mid-twentieth century who still shot in the 4 x 5 format.
