Sycamore was a tree of my youth. A large one lived by a trail in the woods where I played hooky, its smooth lower bark covered as thick as Einstein’s blackboard with the initials of infatuations and school truants from years gone by. Forty years later I took one of my sons to admire my fame and the bark was still covered with names—except that new bark grew over the old, and the testimonials of my time were inside that grand tree. This bowl is made from another sycamore, not my Glover Park giant. Let’s think, though, what might have happened in the shade of your bowl.
