Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003) Kurt Hutton shot this photograph in 1938 at the Southend Fair in Southend-on-Sea, Sussex, England. Born Kurt Hubschmann in Germany, he was one of the founding staff at Picture Post magazine, England's answer to the American LIFE magazine.

Katherine Hepburn started breaking the rules early on. In her autobiography she wrote that in her young tomboy phase she shaved her head and called herself Jimmy.
