Born in the working class himself, the photojournalist Bert Hardy, said that he felt as though these gals with whom he spent a day in 1938 might have been his aunts and their friends. He accompanied these women who worked as chars (English for cleaning ladies) on a rare treat for them, a daylong coach outing to the seaside resort of Southend. They obviously found their way to the pub, and Bert Hardy was there to record the high-spirited fun of their day off on a toot.
